I found creative writing on retirement. I create short stories, essays, and flash prose drawing on irony and humor, the unexpected, and life's courageous moments. I studied as a Fellow at Atheneum, a masters level writing program, and cofounded Stepping Stones Writing Retreats. I founded Writers Rap About Text (WRAT). My work is published or forthcoming in journals including The Summerset Review, Chiron Review, LitBreak Magazine, and COMP: An Interdisciplinary Journal, as well as on platforms such as Fiction on the Web.
When I write, I love to start with an odd detail or experience and let my mind rock from there. I often have no idea how the story will unfold, even when it is about actual, real-life experiences. I let the story speak to me. This is where I feel the creativity inching up out of a blank interior, almost like a good dream forgotten, then remembered.
I began my creative writing firmly entrenched in fiction. I called my site, fiction-mostly.com. Ironically, today I have more nonfiction stories published than fiction ones. This reflects the "writing journey," as people like to call it. I've grown and I've changed. I am planning a collection of stories, both fiction and nonfiction. Editors tell you not to do this and to stick with one genre. So we'll see how this plays out, too.
